The Parma Police Department announced on April 9 that it is increasing efforts to remind e-bike riders about local laws and safety guidelines as summer approaches.
The initiative aims to reduce bicycle-related crashes, which are most common between July and October. The department is distributing infographics through social media and in the community to educate cyclists about the three classes of e-bikes, their speed limits, and rider eligibility.
According to Parma Ordinance 373.21, all bikers and their passengers must wear helmets. E-bikes must also have a white light on the front, a red light and reflector on the back when riding between sunset and sunrise. Local regulations prohibit using an e-bike’s motor on sidewalks but allow it in roadways where riders must follow all bicycle traffic laws.
Public Information Officer Scott Traxler said, “The number one thing is we don’t want to take that fun away. Just be safe. Be responsible. Understand that you’re sharing the road with not only other people, but with vehicles in excess of 2000 pounds.” Officers will monitor for dangerous behavior among riders.
First-time offenders involved in minor incidents will receive warnings along with educational information. More serious violations could result in citations or bike impoundment; if juveniles are involved, their parents may also be cited.
The police department encourages residents seeking more information about local bike laws or wishing to follow up on this story to contact them directly.
