Shontel Brown, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Ohio’s 11th district, shared her perspectives on recent legislative developments and national celebrations through a series of tweets. Brown, who has been serving in Congress since 2021 after replacing Marcia Fudge, expressed strong opposition to a piece of legislation she refers to as “Trump’s Big Ugly Bill.”

On July 3, 2025, Brown stated her position against the bill by saying “On behalf of NE Ohio, I voted against Trump’s Big Ugly Bill, a cruel and reckless piece of legislation that rips basic food and health care benefits away from millions.” She described the bill as detrimental to essential services.

Later that day, Brown voiced her frustration with the passing of the bill by Republicans. She remarked “Some real talk after Republicans passed Trump’s Big Ugly Bill. I’m frustrated and to be honest I’m angry, because this bill hurts people.” Despite her disappointment, she emphasized the importance of continued advocacy.

The following day on July 4th, Brown took a moment to celebrate Independence Day with an optimistic message about American values. She tweeted “Happy Independence Day! Today, we celebrate the hard-won freedom and democracy we cherish as Americans and commit to those ideals for generations to come.”

Brown’s background includes service in the Cuyahoga County Council from 2015 until her congressional appointment in 2021. Born in Cleveland in 1975 and currently residing in Warrensville Heights, she holds a BS from Wilberforce University.
