Rep. Shontel Brown, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Ohio’s 11th district, has been vocal about her opposition to recent legislative proposals by former President Donald Trump and his party. Brown, who succeeded Marcia Fudge in 2021 and previously served on the Cuyahoga County Council, has utilized social media to express her concerns regarding the impact of these policies on vulnerable populations.

On May 14, 2025, Rep. Brown criticized Trump’s Republican Reconciliation bill, stating that it “doesn’t only throw millions off Medicaid,” but also incorporates new SNAP requirements aimed at denying benefits to single parents and families with children over the age of seven. She asserted that this approach “does not encourage self-sufficiency,” but rather “just punishes poverty.” The full tweet can be accessed here.

Later that day, Brown further addressed the issue of SNAP eligibility requirements included in the bill for parents of children aged six and above. She posed a rhetorical question about what would happen when children as young as seven start missing meals due to these restrictions, noting there was “silence on the other side” in response to her query. Her remarks were posted here.

On May 15, 2025, Rep. Brown turned her attention to Trump’s economic policies, specifically targeting tariffs imposed during his administration. She succinctly labeled these tariffs as a “tax on working class people,” emphasizing their detrimental effect on those already struggling financially. The statement is available here.

Shontel Brown has represented Ohio’s 11th District since 2021 after earning a Bachelor of Science from Wilberforce University. Born in Cleveland and residing in Warrensville Heights, she continues to advocate for policies supporting her constituents’ welfare.
