Rep. Shontel Brown, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Ohio’s 11th district, has voiced her strong opposition to what she refers to as “Trump’s Big Ugly Bill.” Her concerns are primarily focused on proposed cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid.

On July 2, 2025, Rep. Brown took to Twitter to express her disapproval of the bill. She stated: “On the House floor I spoke out against the devastating SNAP cuts in Trump’s Big Ugly Bill. This isn’t good policy, it’s plunder.” She emphasized that the bill would take resources from those in need and give them to wealthier individuals, declaring her intention to vote against it.

Later that day, at 19:45 UTC, Brown shared her experience with fellow members of The Black Caucus in attempting to challenge Republican efforts related to the bill. She tweeted: “I took to the floor with @TheBlackCaucus to demand Republicans protect against Medicaid and SNAP cuts in Trump’s Big Ugly Bill.” However, she noted that their attempts were thwarted by House Republicans who blocked their actions without allowing a vote.

In another tweet posted at 22:19 UTC on July 2nd, Rep. Brown questioned Republican support for the bill which she claims would negatively impact millions of Americans’ access to healthcare and nutrition benefits while harming national finances. She asked: “How is ANY Republican voting for this bill?”

Shontel Brown has served in Congress since replacing Marcia Fudge in 2021 and previously held a position on the Cuyahoga County Council from 2015 until her congressional election.
