New elements on the story map include the addition of a timeline of Dr. King’s visits to Cuyahoga County, historical comparison photos, a revamped modern look and more.
MLK made his 1st visit to City of Cleveland - City Hall in 1956 at the Hotel Hollenden, which was at the corner of Superior Ave. and E. 6th. He spoke on the progress of the Montgomery, AL bus boycott at the National Negro Funeral Directors Association annual convention.
Reverend King made his way to Cleveland Heights in 1963, and spoke to the Episcopal Society for Christian & Racial Unity after the protests in Birmingham, AL.
In 1965, Dr. King visited the Heights Christian Church on Van Aken Blvd. in Shaker Heights, now known as the FaithWorks Church. King: “Our destiny is tied up in the destiny of America.”
Over the span of 11 years, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. visited 7 different cities/neighborhoods in Cuyahoga County, urging voter registration/participation and fortifying the civil rights movement. His lasting legacy is felt to this day.
