Rep. Shontel Brown, U.S. Congresswoman representing Ohio’s 11th district since 2021, announced on July 24, 2025, the introduction of legislation to name the post office in Collinwood after Tech Sergeant Alma Gladys Minter, a Cleveland native who served in the Six Triple Eight Postal Battalion during World War II.
In her first tweet posted at 13:36 UTC, Brown stated: "Proud to introduce legislation to name the post office in Collinwood in honor of Tech Sergeant Alma Gladys Minter, a Clevelander who served in the historic Six Triple Eight Postal Battalion in WWII."
She followed with another message at the same time: "First they were doubted, then they were overlooked."
A third tweet highlighted the achievements of Minter and her unit: "The Six Triple Eight was the first and only all-Black Women’s Army Corps unit to serve overseas during the war. Minter and the Six Triple Eight cleared a backlog of over 17 million pieces of mail - connecting the home front and the front lines and boosting morale." This unit played a crucial role by ensuring communication between soldiers abroad and their families at home.
Brown has represented Ohio's 11th District since replacing Marcia Fudge in Congress in 2021. Before joining Congress, she served on Cuyahoga County Council from 2015 to 2021. Born in Cleveland in 1975, Brown resides in Warrensville Heights and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Wilberforce University.
