Rep. Shontel Brown, who represents Ohio’s 11th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of messages on her official X account reflecting on national tragedies and ongoing safety concerns affecting educational institutions.
On September 11, 2025, Brown marked the anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a statement honoring victims and first responders. She wrote, "24 years ago today the deadliest terrorist attack in American history took place. As we solemnly remember that tragic day, we mourn those lost, honor the survivors and heroic first responders, and stand with the families whose lives were forever changed on September 11, 2001."
Later that day, Brown addressed threats made against several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), expressing concern for affected communities. She stated on September 11, "This is not okay. Our country must be better than this! Several HBCUs are under lockdown right now because of targeted threats. It’s heartbreaking and deeply upsetting. Holding the students, staff, and their families in prayer as we wait for more information."
The following day, Brown encouraged constituents to stay informed about legislative developments by subscribing to her newsletter: "Stay up to date on key votes, new legislation, and constituent events in Northeast Ohio - click here to subscribe to our e-newsletter list" (September 12).
Brown has served as U.S. Representative for Ohio's 11th District since replacing Marcia Fudge in 2021; she previously served on Cuyahoga County Council from 2015 to 2021. Born in Cleveland in 1975 and currently residing in Warrensville Heights at age 47, Brown holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Wilberforce University.
