U.S. Representative Shontel Brown, who serves Ohio’s 11th congressional district, posted several messages on her social media account this week addressing the legacy of Congresswoman Mary Rose Oakar, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, and criticizing former President Donald Trump’s economic policies.
On September 15, Brown acknowledged the passing of a fellow Ohio legislator in her post: "Rest in Peace Congresswoman Mary Rose Oakar, a champion for women and working class Cleveland families in Congress for 16 years. The first Democratic woman elected to Congress from Ohio, she was an advocate for equality, breast cancer research, and constituent service. My prayers".
Later that day, Brown recognized the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month with a message highlighting the importance of the Hispanic community in Northeast Ohio. She wrote: "Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! This month we celebrate the rich & vibrant culture of our Hispanic communities across NE Ohio and recognize their contributions to our country. This month and throughout the year, let’s make sure that the rights of Hispanic Americans are" (September 15).
On September 16, Brown addressed economic concerns for Black workers under former President Trump’s administration. She stated: "Trump's policies have been a disaster for Black workers, who are often the first fired when layoffs begin. Higher costs and fewer jobs. He's breaking the economy and soon more people will suffer."
Brown has represented Ohio's 11th District since 2021 after succeeding Marcia Fudge. Before her tenure in Congress, she served on Cuyahoga County Council from 2015 to 2021. Born in Cleveland in 1975 and currently residing in Warrensville Heights, Brown holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Wilberforce University.
