WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Max Miller (OH-07) released the following statement regarding his vote in support of a package of six appropriations bills. The measure passed by a total of 339-85. 

“I’ve heard a clear and consistent message from my constituents in Northeast Ohio since last January: cut back on Washington’s reckless spending and end business as usual. 

I said earlier this week that I would vote for this package only if it did three things: rein in out-of-control spending, secure critical resources for Northeast Ohio, and right-size our bloated overreaching federal agencies. This bill met that test, and while it wasn’t perfect, it was a common-sense conservative win.  

Last year, House Republicans took these goals to heart. That was why we began the process of passing individual appropriations bills through regular order and an open process. We passed spending caps that can save our country as much as $2.1 trillion. And today, while we did not get everything that we wanted in this package, we have a bicameral agreement on the first six spending bills that will move us in the right direction toward reining in our spending problem and getting our fiscal house in order. $34 trillion in debt is enough.  

In addition to spending caps, the package contains resources for 15 projects important to communities in our district. That’s money to make our communities safer, stronger, and better places to live. I worked closely with local officials and stakeholders to identify where these resources were most needed and best spent, and now, I look forward to ensuring the continued good stewardship of our tax dollars.  

Importantly, these projects come out of funds for existing grant programs and do not add anything to our topline spending numbers. This money was already set to be spent, but now, instead of the Biden Administration spending it on its pet projects, it will be put to work right here in Ohio. 

This package also takes important steps to right-size our bloated overreaching federal agencies. The FBI’s budget will be cut back by 6% and the ATF’s bloated budget will see a 7% reduction. 

In the coming weeks, I look forward to working on the other 6 bills that will address the pressing issues of securing our border, bolstering our national defense, and providing critical resources for our military men and women. 

These appropriations bills are not perfect, but I’m confident that this is a step in the right direction and that this legislation is good for Northeast Ohio.”
