Rep. Shontel Brown, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Ohio’s 11th district, has shared her insights on the reconciliation markup that began on May 13, 2025, in the Agriculture Committee. Through a series of tweets, she addresses concerns regarding proposed cuts to food assistance and their broader implications.

In a tweet posted on May 13, 2025, Rep. Brown highlighted the commencement of reconciliation markup in the Agriculture Committee and pointed out significant concerns about Republicans' proposal for a $290 billion cut to food assistance. She emphasized the potential impact this could have on various sectors: "Here’s what you need to know about Republicans’ proposed $290 billion cut to food assistance and what that means for our economy, families, and farmers."

Continuing her critique on May 13, 2025, Rep. Brown addressed specific components of the bill by stating that it eliminates a substantial portion of traditional farm bill provisions: "This bill discards 90% of the traditional farm bill to push a partisan agenda." She noted that such measures undermine critical aspects like the nutrition title which supports both rural and urban economies.

On the same day, Rep. Brown further challenged claims made by Republican leadership regarding benefits to farmers from these cuts: "Republican leadership claims these cuts help farmers. They don’t." She argued that instead of aiding farmers, these actions would disrupt bipartisan support for farm bills and destabilize agricultural regions by diminishing consumer purchasing power.

Shontel Brown has been serving in Congress since replacing Marcia Fudge in 2021 after previously serving on Cuyahoga County Council from 2015 to 2021. Born in Cleveland in 1975 and residing in Warrensville Heights, she holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Wilberforce University.
