Shontel Brown, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Ohio's 11th district, has been vocal about her opposition to recent legislation introduced by former President Donald Trump. Brown took to social media to express her concerns regarding what she describes as harmful impacts of the bill on working-class families.
On May 21, 2025, Brown announced that she was about to speak before the Rules Committee in opposition to what she referred to as "Trump’s Big Ugly Bill." She emphasized that "@HouseDemocrats are using every legislative tool we have to fight this awful legislation."
The following day, on May 22, 2025, Brown detailed her actions in the Rules Committee against the bill. She criticized its provisions as "cold, calculated cuts," particularly those affecting SNAP benefits for families. Brown stated that she had filed an amendment aimed at reversing these cuts. According to her post, "This bill ignores the real lives of working class families and makes their lives harder, not easier."
Later on May 22, Brown continued her critique of Trump and Republican lawmakers' approach in handling economic issues. She accused them of exacerbating costs and hindering assistance efforts for everyday citizens. In her words: "Instead of lowering costs, Trump and Republicans are raising them... Instead of giving everyday folks a hand up, Trump and Republicans are giving them a shove down."
Brown has served in Congress since 2021 after succeeding Marcia Fudge. She previously held a position on the Cuyahoga County Council from 2015 until her congressional appointment.
