Rep. Shontel Brown, U.S. Congresswoman representing Ohio’s 11th district, announced the introduction of the U-FIGHT Act to address uterine fibroids through research, education, and treatment funding. Brown made the announcement on July 15, 2025, highlighting both her personal experience and a new partnership with Senator Alsobrooks in advancing the bill.
In a post on July 15, Brown stated: "Today, I filed the U-FIGHT Act - legislation to fund research, education, and treatment for uterine fibroids. And thanks to the partnership of @Sen_Alsobrooks, this bill is also in the Senate! It’s time to take action." Later that evening she wrote: "So many women have suffered in silence due to uterine fibroids – I was one of them – but the time for silence is over. It's time for action. Today, I introduced the U-FIGHT Act - legislation to support research, awareness, and treatment."
On July 17, Brown shared her participation in an event at the Capitol with actress Lupita Nyong’o and other survivors: "I joined @Lupita_Nyongo and survivors at the Capitol to share our stories on how fibroids have impacted our lives. Women are expected to suffer in silence - that has to change. My U-FIGHT Act supports research & treatment for fibroids. We need a cure."
Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that affect millions of women worldwide and can lead to significant health complications if left untreated.
Brown has represented Ohio's 11th District since 2021 after previously serving on Cuyahoga County Council from 2015 to 2021. She was born in Cleveland in 1975 and resides in Warrensville Heights. Brown holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Wilberforce University.
